Let there be light.
At the end of the tunnel a light appears...
Life is the allegory of the cave.
And we have walked through it a thousand times, choosing different pathways, or winding back on the same one, letting the light illuminate our way forward. While the story of Plato's cave suggests that the big bright blinding light of the sun is somewhere out there (and we just have to find our way "out"), I say it's inside, and we just have to look within.
Remember what Rumi said... "the wound is the place where the light enters". Heal enough wounds, and pretty soon you'll be radiating rays of light like a diamond.
If the Earth is a mirror image to who we are inside of us (as I've heard in the realm of Chinese medicine), then is the big brilliant sun a representation of our inner sun...our creative brightness that resides deep inside the core of our inner "earth"? When we rearrange the word earth... we get heart. Coincidence? Not a word in my vocabulary.
While we're still in the midst of a thawing winter (okay maybe it wasn't that bad here in the southwest), I can begin to feel the shifting of seasons. A subtle stir of renewal approaching. A slight restless feeling of yearning to peep my head from my burrowed nest, just like the groundhog.
I crave connection and solitude... I am a juxtaposition of the contrasting seasons, but I guess that is what balancing our yin and yang is all about.
I've been pouring water into myself everyday. And just as I finish writing these words, my pot overflows with boiling water and the sound of sizzling on the stovetop... coincidence? I don't believe in those. But I love how the elements are consistently on cue.. and this is how I communicate with nature.
Reeling it back in... I have been giving myself lots of time to reflect and hear my own inner dialogue, carefully cultivating a cocoon for creativity out here in the quiet countryside. And now, my ideas are overflowing like that pot of boiling water, almost too many to name. I love this part of the creative process... and I know just like nature, each idea will germinate in its own growth cycle.
Speaking of growth cycles... I've been growing my own seeds and microgreens. I love seeing the transformation and it reminds me how excited the creative process can be when we start to see results take shape. To nurture each cycle instead of trying to rush it is a lesson I'm learning! (P.S. if you want to learn how to grow your own microgreens, check the bottom of my email.)
Each of us are in our own growth stage of our journey. It doesn't matter whether you are in the sprouting stage, or the blooming stage. You are where you're meant to be.
But we can easily get so caught up on other people's paths, that we compare theirs to our own and feel like we need to be doing more, less or anything but acknowledging our here and now. And that my friend, diminishes our own uniqueness. Do the wildflowers compare their petals? Does the caterpillar worry about the other butterflies hatching from their chrysalis? You are perfectly where you are supposed to be. Let others inspire you, but do not let that stop your creative flow.
I’m glad this world is changing. I've come so far from living one extreme to another. I remember once upon a time when I cried in bathroom stalls on the 21st floor of Wall Street, and here I am now, living a peaceful bohemian life next to cows and horses. That is what growth does to us. How many times I have had to leap on faith and jump through the fear...
All this to say...we have to acknowledge feeling the highs and lows. The only guarantee in life is change. Because that is how nature operates. Where you are now is temporary (whether that's a high or a low), and being fully present in what it is teaching you is where the gold is. Don't dim your light, trying to fit in spaces you've outgrown, if it's time for you to leave your chrysalis.
Spread your wings and light the way.
